Dual Language Curriculum Facilitator is Employee of the Month

Greensboro, N.C. – Dual language programs boast many benefits for young learners. From building strong social connections to raising cultural awareness, dual language students achieve mastery of the curriculum objectives in all core content areas while developing proficiency in a second language; however, running these initiatives would not be possible without the appropriate support systems in place.

At Allen Jay Elementary, Milay Alvarez acts as that support system. As a dual language curriculum facilitator, she works hard to provide teachers with the resources they need to instruct their students successfully in English, Spanish or Urdu.

“Mrs. Alvarez always goes above and beyond supporting the dual language teachers at school,” writes kindergarten teacher Barbara Diaz. “She works very hard to provide teachers with the necessary tools during our PLC meetings. She takes a step forward to let us know what is expected from us and helps in any way she sees fit. She is always available for questions and feedback. She does a book study in the afternoons that helps us understand better the dual language initiative. She helped us with kindergarten registration, organized multicultural night, and even has the energy to dance with us and present a show for all our community. She always has a positive attitude and treats everyone with care and respect.”

Alvarez’s dedication to students, staff and families at Allen Jay Elementary has created a community that celebrates diverse cultural backgrounds and differences. These types of learning environments are crucial to the success of our learners, which is why Alvarez has earned the title of Employee of the Month for June.

Alvarez received a $50 gift card courtesy of the Greensboro Jaycees. During the month of June, her photo will be displayed at the district’s central offices, at Allen Jay Elementary and in the Greensboro Jaycees office.
