Fifth-Grade Teacher Named GCS Employee of the Month

Great teachers are those that you remember for having a positive influence on your life. For one former Gibsonville Elementary student, that teacher was Amy Simpson, who yesterday was named the January GCS Employee of the Month.

Now in the Army, the former student shared a photo and posted a message to the school’s Facebook page, wanting to let Simpson know that he was doing well and that she had a strong influence on his education. Principal Jessica Bohn endorsed Simpson in her nomination, praising her for investing in her students and for providing high-quality science instruction.

“Students get excited about learning science in Mrs. Simpson’s class!” wrote Bohn. “She chairs our science committee, leads our school science fair, serves on our IPS committee aimed at tracking intervention data, and provides highly engaging science instruction that is hands-on, standards-aligned and data-driven. However, this student’s post to our school Facebook is proof of the indelible mark she leaves on her diverse group of students for years after. These kinds of messages are why teachers teach.”

Simpson received a $50 gift card courtesy of the Greensboro Jaycees. During the month of January, her photo will hang at the district’s central offices, at Gibsonville Elementary and at the Greensboro Jaycees office.
